Virat Kohli to Miss Opening T20I Against Afghanistan

The anticipation surrounding the India vs Afghanistan T20I series primarily revolves around the comeback of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to the T20I format.

The star batsmen’s last appearance in a T20I match was during the 2022 T20 World Cup, where India faced defeat in the semi-finals.

Since then, their participation has been limited to ODIs and Tests. However, with the impending T20 World Cup in 2024, the Indian cricket team management decided to include both players in the squad for this final T20I series before the global tournament. Nevertheless, during the pre-match press conference, Rahul Dravid disclosed that Virat Kohli would not be part of the playing XI in the opening T20I against Afghanistan on Thursday.

The BCCI selectors engaged in discussions with Virat Kohli to clarify expectations from him in the shortest format of the game for India. A meeting between BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Kohli reportedly took place in Cape Town, where they discussed the captain’s role and responsibilities in T20Is.

While the report did not specify whether similar discussions took place with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, it highlighted that Virat Kohli holds an impressive T20I record. Kohli has accumulated 4,008 runs in 115 matches at an average of 52.73, with a strike rate of 137.96. Additionally, Kohli recently achieved the milestone of becoming the first batter to score 2000 runs in seven different calendar years during India’s 1st Test against South Africa.

Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma have been absent from T20I action since India’s semi-final loss to England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in November 2022. Opting to prioritize longer formats, they focused on events like the World Test Championship final and the ODI World Cup in 2023.

The T20I series against Afghanistan marks India’s final T20 assignment ahead of the T20 Cricket World Cup 2024 in June. After the series, players will gear up for the Indian Premier League (IPL) scheduled from March to May. Post the T20I series, India is set to host England for a five-match Test series, serving as their last international engagement of the year before the T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan is set to miss the services of leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who is in the process of recovering from a lower-back surgery. Despite not being fully fit, Rashid Khan is traveling with the team and undergoing rehabilitation. The Afghan captain, Ibrahim Zardan, expressed hope that Rashid Khan will regain fitness soon, acknowledging that his absence will be felt during the series.

India is gearing up for its last T20 series, a crucial lead-up to the T20 World Cup, against Afghanistan with three matches at home. The Indian cricket team, having played 25 matches since the last T20 World Cup, winning 16, is considered one of the favorites for the upcoming 20-team tournament.

The squad witnesses significant changes with the return of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who will be featuring in the T20 format for the first time since the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

On the eve of the first T20I in Mohali, head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that Virat Kohli has opted out of the game due to personal reasons but will be available for the last two matches in Indore and Bangalore.
This presents a significant opportunity for Tilak Varma to make a lasting impression in Indian colors ahead of the T20 World Cup. Varma, who made his debut for India last year, has been a regular at number three in series against West Indies, Ireland, Australia, and South Africa. In 14 innings, the southpaw has scored 310 runs at a strike rate of 141.
With Kohli likely to bat at three upon his return and Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Rinku Singh expected to fill the remainder of the batting lineup for the T20 World Cup, the game in Mohali is indeed crucial for Tilak Varma to showcase his skills.
